Nitinol Braid Prebake

Precision Control Systems developed a custom pre-bake system for setting the shape of Nitinol braids formed onto ceramic-coated stainless steel mandrels. This system delivers highly localized, controlled heat to achieve proper thermal shape-setting prior to final processing.

System Overview:

  • Equipped with a PCS Model 4069 chamber-style infrared heater
  • Heater scans vertically across the length of the braid for even thermal exposure
  • Target temperature: 425 °C, controlled for consistent Nitinol phase transformation
  • Integrated compressed air cooling returns parts to room temperature for safe handling
  • Accommodates mandrel diameters from 3 mm to 40 mm
  • Supports part lengths up to 36 inches (914 mm)
  • Variable heater scan speeds allow compensation for part geometry and mass differences
  • Enclosed in a rigid aluminum frame with polycarbonate protective panels
  • Built-in interlocks ensure safe operation during heating and cooling cycles
  • Operator-friendly interface allows recipe selection and process monitoring
